Otto Djaya Stories
Graphic Design for Socials | 2024
Otto Djaya Stories is a platform dedicated to sharing and learning about the artist Otto Djaya (1916-2002), a renowned Indonesian artist as portrayed in the book Otto Djaya: Story Teller to the Indonesian People, authored by art collectors Hans Peter and Inge-Marie Holst. Djaya, part of a cohort of 1930s Indonesian artists, infused optimism into his art, blending realism and mythical drama, showcasing beauty, legends, and folklore in both physicality and emotions.
The content design for Otto Djaya Stories is deeply inspired by the vibrant and insightful works of Djaya, drawn from his extensive archive. The Otto Djaya logo was designed by Willem Sandberg (1897-1984), the director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam from 1945 to 1963, whom Djaya met while residing in the Netherlands in 1947.
All paintings, illustrations, and drawings showed in this section were solely made by Otto Djaya. Images are courtesy of Inge-Marie and Hans Peter Holst.

Given the focus on educational content, the design is intentionally minimalistic, allowing Otto Djaya's works to shine. A simple circular frame in solid red serves as the transition sequence, symbolizing a telescope view into a world of wonder. The design also incorporates motion sequences and cropping techniques that draw attention to Djaya's unique subject matter, art medium, and archive, inviting the audience to explore the deeper meanings behind each masterpiece.
The visual identity of the Otto Djaya Stories platform embraces his influences for the young generation by implementing vibrant colors and blending old and new styles of typefaces.
